Why Behavior Makes Sense Once You See the System

Behavior is often the first thing we notice.

It may be the last thing we should try to change.

Refusing. Yelling. Shutting down. Avoiding. Crying. Hitting. Not starting.

When something is going wrong, the natural question is:

How do I stop this behavior?

But

Something happened upstream.

A person encountered a particular environment. That environment influenced their nervous system. Their nervous system changed what was available. And what we eventually saw was behavior.

Person → Environment → Nervous System → What’s Available → Behavior

So before we try to change what we can see, let’s understand what created it.

Every Brain Is Different

Neurodiversity begins with a simple reality:

Human brains are not all built the same way.

We differ in how we process sensory information, direct attention, use language, organize action, experience emotion, perceive signals from our bodies, and interact with the world around us.

For some people, those differences are subtle.

For others, they shape nearly every part of daily life.

Neither tells us that something has gone wrong.

Different brains aren’t problems to solve.

They’re systems to understand.

Some Differences Have Names

Some differences in how brains and bodies work have names.

Those names can be useful.

A diagnosis can give families language for experiences they have struggled to explain. It can open doors to support, accommodations, treatment, community, and understanding.

But a label is a starting point.

It cannot tell you exactly how one person experiences the world.

Two autistic people can have profoundly different sensory systems.

Two people with ADHD can struggle with completely different aspects of attention or executive functioning.

Learning differences can affect reading, writing, mathematics, language, memory, processing, or combinations of these.

And neurological differences don’t exist separately from the rest of the body. Some people also live with physiological conditions that affect energy, pain, heart rate, circulation, digestion, proprioception, or other body systems.

These differences can interact.

That interaction matters.

These aren’t medically equivalent categories.

They are separated here deliberately because understanding a person sometimes requires looking across more than one layer of the system.

The goal isn’t collecting labels.

The goal is understanding how this particular person works.

Knowing the Label Isn’t Enough

Knowing what something is called is not the same as understanding what is happening.

A diagnosis can help us understand patterns.

But it cannot tell us why someone could do something yesterday and cannot access it today.

It cannot tell us why a child functions beautifully in one environment and struggles profoundly in another.

And it cannot tell us what happened in the minutes, hours, or days before a behavior occurred.

For that, we have to look at the system.

The model reads: Person, then Environment, then Nervous System, then What’s Available, then Behavior.

The person matters.

But so does the environment around them.

The environment influences the nervous system.

The nervous system influences what abilities are available in that moment.

And behavior is often what we see at the end.

So instead of asking only:

What diagnosis explains this?

We can begin asking:

What happened in this system?

That question takes us somewhere a label alone cannot.

Behavior Is Communication

What may be visible

Behavior is information.

It is often the part of a system we can see.

Those behaviors matter. But they don’t tell us, by themselves, what created them.

The same behavior can emerge from very different conditions.

Refusal might reflect overwhelm, uncertainty, exhaustion, pain, fear, sensory overload, a demand that exceeds current capacity—or something else entirely.

A shutdown might look like disengagement from the outside while reflecting a nervous system that has become overloaded on the inside.

Behavior can carry information about:

emotional load

Possible source of load

physiological load

Observable behavior can carry information about sensory, cognitive, emotional, and physiological load.

And children often communicate through behavior long before they have the language, awareness, or access necessary to explain what they are experiencing.

This doesn’t mean every behavior should be accepted or ignored.

It means understanding should come before interpretation.

Instead of beginning with:

How do I stop this behavior?

We can begin with:

What might this behavior be telling me?

Because once behavior becomes information, we have somewhere else to look.

Underneath it.

Understanding the System

What We See Is Only the Surface

Behavior is visible.

Much of what influences behavior is not.

We may see:

Behavior

Boundary of what can be seen
Beneath the surface

But underneath the surface, a person may be experiencing:

Exhaustion.
Sensory overload.
Anxiety.
Pain.
Hunger.
Uncertainty.
Masking fatigue.
Cognitive overload.
Loss of control.

And even those experiences have conditions surrounding them.

How much sleep did they get?

How noisy was the environment?

How many transitions have already happened?

Are they hungry, thirsty, uncomfortable, or in pain?

How much social monitoring have they been doing?

How predictable did the day feel?

How many demands have accumulated?

The visual separates visible behavior, possible hidden load, and the surrounding conditions worth investigating; it does not assign a single direct cause.

None of these automatically explains a behavior.

They give us places to investigate.

That is the purpose of looking beneath the surface.

Not to excuse what happened.

Not to guess at a hidden cause.

But to widen the field of information we consider before deciding what the behavior means.

What we see matters.

What we cannot immediately see may matter too.

Masking Costs Energy

Sometimes a neurodivergent person appears to be managing beautifully.

They participate.

Follow directions.

Complete their work.

Navigate conversations.

Move through transitions.

Hold it together.

But what looks effortless from the outside may require enormous effort on the inside.

Many neurodivergent people learn to monitor and modify themselves in order to meet the expectations of the environments around them.

They may be:

  • Suppressing stims.
  • Monitoring facial expressions and tone of voice.
  • Rehearsing what to say.
  • Trying to interpret unspoken social rules.
  • Tolerating uncomfortable sensory input.
  • Forcing attention.
  • Managing uncertainty.
  • Tracking what everyone else seems to know automatically.

This is masking.

And masking uses resources.

  • Attention.
  • Working memory.
  • Emotional energy.
  • Physical energy.
  • Cognitive capacity.

A person can therefore appear successful while their available resources are steadily being depleted.

That distinction matters.

Sometimes what adults interpret as:

“They handled it just fine.”

may actually mean:

“They were able to hold it together until they couldn’t anymore.”

The behavior that appears later may make very little sense if we look only at the moment it occurred.

It makes more sense when we look at everything the nervous system was carrying before it.

Why Home Gets the Explosion

Parents often ask:

“Why can they do it at school and not at home?”

It can be confusing.

A child may make it through an entire school day—

following directions, completing work, navigating transitions, managing sensory input, interacting with other people—

and then fall apart shortly after getting home.

From the outside, this can look contradictory.

If they were able to manage at school, why can’t they manage now?

But the two environments aren’t showing us two different children.

They may be showing us two different points in the same nervous-system process.

Throughout the day, a child may be using resources to:

  • Monitor themselves.
  • Adapt.
  • Process sensory information.
  • Manage social expectations.
  • Navigate uncertainty.
  • Shift attention.
  • Meet demands.
  • Suppress discomfort.
  • Transition again and again.

Those resources are not unlimited.

Beginning of the day

School

Across time

Accumulated demands

Resources used across the day

Later in the day

Home

This progression represents time and accumulation across a day. It does not position school and home as opposing environments.

By the time the child reaches home, their available capacity may be very different from what it was that morning.

And home itself may matter.

For some children, home is the place where they no longer have to hold everything together.

The environment feels safer.

The demands are different.

The mask can come down.

So sometimes:

School gets the performance.

Home gets the recovery.

That doesn’t mean every after-school explosion is caused by masking or depletion.

It means the difference between settings is information.

Instead of asking:

“If they can do it there, why won’t they do it here?”

We can ask:

“What changed between there and here?”

Because the person may be the same.

Their available capacity may not be.

Understanding the System

Access Changes. Ability Does Not.

There is a difference between having an ability and being able to access that ability in a particular moment.

A child may know how to solve a problem.

Use language.

Follow a sequence.

Manage frustration.

Shift attention.

Make a decision.

Ask for help.

Transition from one activity to another.

Those abilities can be real—and still become harder to access under certain conditions.

When a nervous system is carrying sensory overload, exhaustion, pain, uncertainty, physiological stress, cognitive demand, or emotional load, the person may have fewer resources available for everything else.

What adults see can then look like a loss of skill.

“But you know how to do this.”

“You did this yesterday.”

“I know you’re capable of this.”

And they may be right.

The ability may still be there.

What changed is its accessibility.

This is why inconsistency does not automatically tell us that someone is unwilling, unmotivated, manipulative, or choosing not to use a skill they possess.

It gives us another possibility to investigate:

Does this person have the ability but temporarily lack access to it under these conditions?

That distinction changes the question.

Instead of asking only:

“Can they do this?”

We can also ask:

“What helps make this ability accessible?”

The ability didn’t disappear.

The nervous system temporarily lost access to it.

Nervous System Changes Capacity

Capacity—what’s available in a given moment—is not fixed.

It changes with the nervous system.

When a person feels relatively safe, regulated, rested, and supported, more resources may be available for thinking, communicating, remembering, adapting, and organizing action.

As load increases, what’s available can change.

Language may become harder to find.

Working memory may hold less.

Flexible thinking may narrow.

Transitions may become more difficult.

Problem-solving may decrease.

Emotions may become harder to regulate.

Executive functioning may become less available.

This doesn’t mean the person suddenly became less intelligent, less capable, or less skilled.

Their nervous system changed what was available to them.

This is why the same person—

with the same brain,

the same knowledge,

and the same underlying abilities—

can function very differently across different moments.

The relationship looks like this:

The nervous system influences what capacities are available in a given moment.

A person moves through an environment.

The environment influences the nervous system.

The nervous system influences what’s available.

And behavior is what we eventually see.

This is why looking only at behavior gives us such a small piece of the system.

If we want to understand why something became less available, we have to look upstream.

What was happening in the environment?

What was happening in the nervous system?

What became harder—or easier to do?

Once we begin asking those questions, inconsistency stops being something we have to explain away.

It becomes information about the system.

Regulation Comes Before Learning

When access is low, our instinct is often to add more.

More explanation.

More reminders.

More reasoning.

More correction.

More consequences.

More demands.

But if nervous-system state is limiting access to language, working memory, flexibility, emotional regulation, or problem-solving, asking for more of those abilities may not make them more available.

Sometimes the first task is not teaching.

It is helping restore access.

That may mean reducing sensory load.

Creating predictability.

Lowering demands temporarily.

Offering space.

Supporting movement.

Meeting a physiological need.

Reducing language.

Providing connection.

Allowing time for the nervous system to settle.

What helps will differ from person to person—and even within the same person across different moments.

The principle is not:

Calm down so you can comply.

It is:

Support the nervous system so the person has greater access to themselves.

This is why regulation comes before learning.

When more access becomes available, so may the abilities we were trying to reach through explanation, correction, or instruction.

Safety comes first.

Understanding comes second.

Learning comes third.

Understanding the System

The Goal Isn’t Compliance

If regulation is about restoring access, then the goal cannot simply be better behavior.

The goal is not to make children quieter.

More convenient.

More compliant.

Or easier for adults to manage.

The goal is helping people become more available to themselves.

To recognize what they need.

Communicate when something isn’t working.

Understand their own patterns.

Access their abilities more consistently.

Develop strategies that actually fit the way their system works.

And, over time, participate more actively in shaping the conditions that support them.

That changes the adult’s role too.

Instead of asking only:

How do I get this child to do what is expected?

We can ask:

What is making access difficult right now?

What conditions might support greater access?

How can I help without taking over?

Because support should not end with a child who has learned to tolerate everything we ask of them.

It should move toward a person who increasingly understands themselves and has meaningful ways to advocate for what they need.

Understanding gives us a different place to begin.

Agency gives us somewhere to go.

Understanding the System

What Actually Helps?

Once we stop treating behavior as the problem itself, support becomes more specific.

The question is no longer simply:

How do I make this behavior stop?

It becomes:

What conditions might help this person regain access?

Depending on the person and the moment, supportive conditions might include:

Predictability

Knowing what is coming and what will happen next.

Sensory support

Reducing overwhelming input or providing sensory experiences that help the nervous system organize.

Movement

Giving the body opportunities to move rather than expecting regulation to happen through stillness.

Choice

Creating meaningful opportunities for control and participation.

Reduced demands during overload

Recognizing when adding more expectations is likely to reduce access rather than increase it.

Less language

Using fewer words when processing language itself has become difficult.

Connection before correction

Re-establishing safety and relationship before attempting to teach through the moment.

Physiological support

Considering hunger, thirst, pain, temperature, fatigue, illness, medication effects, or other body-based factors that may be influencing state.

Recovery time

Recognizing that nervous systems sometimes need time without additional demands.

Repair after conflict

Returning to connection after difficult moments rather than allowing the moment to define the relationship.

None of these is the regulation strategy.

And none should become another checklist applied to every person.

A support that helps one child may overwhelm another.

Something that works beautifully today may not be what the same person needs tomorrow.

Because the question is always contextual:

What does this nervous system need under these conditions?

That means effective support begins with observation.

Try something.

Notice what happens.

Learn from the response.

Adjust.

Over time, patterns begin to emerge.

And as children develop greater awareness and communication, something even more important becomes possible:

They can increasingly participate in discovering what works for them.

Change the Question

When something becomes difficult, we can look upstream.

What was happening in the environment?

What was the person carrying physically, cognitively, emotionally, or sensorily?

What was happening in the nervous system?

Did load accumulate?

Did something become overwhelming, unpredictable, painful, exhausting, or unsafe?

What became less available?

What became harder to reach?

Language?

Flexibility?

Working memory?

Problem-solving?

Communication?

Emotional regulation?

And finally:

What might the behavior be communicating about the system?

We may not know immediately.

That’s okay.

The goal isn’t to replace one assumption with another.

It is to become curious enough to investigate.

So instead of beginning with:

What’s wrong with this behavior?

Try beginning somewhere different:

What happened to this system?

That question doesn’t give us an automatic answer.

It gives us a better place to look.

Maybe you recognized someone while reading this.

Your child.

A student.

Someone you work with.

Maybe even yourself.

And now you’re wondering:

What do I do with this understanding?

There are different ways to keep going.

You don’t have to understand everything at once.

Begin by looking upstream.

Notice what changes.

Stay curious about what the system is telling you.
